Welcome to Vertogen Ltd - Wind turbines

Vertogen is a new company dedicated to the design and manufacture of wind turbines. All the Directors have engineering backgrounds complimented by a passion for green energy and many years designing Generators specifically for the Renewable Energy Industry. The company was formed through the belief of being able to produce a turbine like no other in the world.

Having increased ninefold in total capacity since the start of the twenty-first century, wind power is quickly solidifying its position as an important part of the global energy mix. As governments look to reduce dependence on price-volatile fossil fuels and to cut carbon emissions, wind—a widespread, abundant, and inexhaustible resource with zero fuel cost—is becoming an increasingly attractive option. In a 2009 study of world wind resources, Harvard University scientists concluded that the top 10 carbon dioxide-emitting countries could satisfy all of their electricity needs using wind alone. The world will of course use a variety of technologies to meet future energy demand, but these findings leave no doubt: the potential for wind power to replace fossil fuels and take a leading role in stabilizing climate is huge.

"Even in the face of a worldwide economic downturn, the global wind industry posted another record year in 2009 as cumulative installed wind power capacity grew to 158,000 megawatts," says J. Matthew Roney, Staff Researcher for the Earth Policy Institute, in a recent release, "Wind Power Soared Past 150,000 Megawatts in 2009." "With this 31 percent jump, the global wind fleet is now large enough to satisfy the residential electricity needs of 250 million people. Wind provides electricity in over 70 countries, 17 of which now have at least 1,000 megawatts installed."

Wind turbines have existed since 200 B.C in Persia and found in the medieval times windmills, were based on afghan and Iran designs of the 7th-8th century. After 1850, wind power made its comeback in the American Midwest and Denmark to operate pumps etc.

One of the most scenic and successful applications of windpower (and one that still exists), is the extensive use of water pumping machines on the island of Crete. Here, literally hundreds of sail-rotor windmills pump water for crops and livestock.

The first electricity producing windmill was built in 1887 by Prof James Blyth of Anderson's College, Glasgow (Scotland). A larger one was built just after that in Cleveland in 1887-1888 by Charles F. Brush.

The future of Vertical Wind Turbines

The key features of our product, are variable pitch blades, which will allow for self starting and self regulating via an internal governor to optimize torque and rotation speed to match the generator ( PMG Permanent Magnet Generator). This gives the system the widest operating envelope which in turn offers efficiencies un-heard of in the VAWT market and will make all other designs look archaic in comparison.
